One of the most abundant blocks you will find in the Minecraft overworld is grass blocks. However, you may have noticed that you receive dirt blocks instead of grass when you try to break them. While it may initially seem challenging to get grass blocks in survival mode, it is possible to do once you have the right tools. This guide will teach you how to get grass blocks in Minecraft Bedrock and Java Editions.
How to Get Grass Blocks in Minecraft
You need a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment to get grass blocks. Silk Touch allows you to get the block itself rather than the item it drops. For example, mining a diamond ore block with a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe will cause it to drop the ore block instead of diamonds. You also need Silk Touch to mine ice and glass without them breaking. You can add the Silk Touch enchantment to pickaxes, shovels, axes and shears.
Minecraft: How to Make a Lead
The main way to get Silk Touch on the tool of your choice is to use an enchanting table. Since grass blocks break faster when using shovels, it is best to enchant the shovel of your choice. While you have the highest chance of getting Silk Touch with a level 30 enchantment, you can get it as low as at level 10. However, the chances of getting it at level 10 are only around one percent, while the probability jumps to around 14 percent at level 20 and 20 percent at level 30.
Additionally, you can enchant a book for a chance to get Silk Touch on it. If you get a book with Silk Touch on it, you can use an anvil to add the enchantment to your shovel or tool of choice. You will also gain other enchantments such as efficiency or unbreaking if the book has them. However, if the other enchantments are incompatible with the tool, they will not be added.
